Sometimes what you do after the interview is just as important as what you do during the interview and that’s why your interview follow up activities are key. Often times being a bit more proactive in keeping your name on everyone’s lips after the interview can go a long way in setting you apart from the other candidates. Here are some things you should follow up on after your interview.
1. Thank you notes are not old fashioned - they are critical! Send one right after your interview thanking everyone (by name) that talked to you for their time. This helps show that you are professional and thoughtful and will keep your name on the tip of their tongue.
2. When you fill out your forms, as well as on your resume, be sure your contact information is current with the latest email address and cell phone as well as land line. You don’t want to lose the job because they couldn’t contact you!
3. Make sure your references are aware that people will be calling and only list people as reference that you know will show you in a positive light and are likely to call back your prospective employer.
4. If you don’t get the job, simply ask the recruiter to keep your resume on file and consider you for any other positions that might open up. Wait several months and then give the HR person or recruiter a call to inquire about any new openings that you might be suited for. Sometimes this is just the thing to get your resume circulating again!
5. Let them know you are interested. At the end of the interview, or in your thank you letter, be sure to let them know that you are interested and state briefly why you feel you are such a great fit for the job. Employers want employees that are enthusiastic about their position so be sure to convey this to them.
Following up after an interview is not something that everyone does and if you do it professionally, without being pushy, it could really set you apart from the crowd. Who knows, if it is a toss up between you and someone else, a simple thank you note could tip the scales in your favor.
